World Superbike and Supersport Results from Round One at Phillip Island
The weather was picture perfect for the running of Round One of the 2014 World Superbike Championships at Phillip Island.
Superbikes saw the two Aprilias of Giuntoli and Melandri in Pole and position 2 on the grid, with Suzukis of Laverty and Lowes rounding out the front row. Race One saw the two Aprilias lead the way with Giuntoli leading Melandri into turn one, with Davide Giuliano forcing his way into third. The next three saw Baz, Rea and Sykes battling it out for 4th place. Alex Lowes, who led practice and early qualifying times crashed out on lap 4, while Guintoli continued to lead from Giuliano up into second and Melandri third. By mid race Laverty was starting to move through the field and made his way past Sykes, Rea and Baz into 4th place. The second half of the race was all Laverty as he passed Melandri then Giuliano and finally Giuntoli to take the lead. Once there he was never headed, pulling out a gap of 3 seconds on Melandri with Giuntoli third.
Race 2 again saw the Aprilias lead from the start however Laverty on the Suzuki quickly climbed through the field, seemingly heading for a double win. However on lap 15 Laverty's Suzuki blew up leaving a trail of oil on the track. Officials called the race at that point leaving Giuntoli leading from Loris Baz and Tom Sykes third.
The World Supersport race saw more drama as on lap six Jack Kennedy from Ireland's Honda destroyed it's engine leaving oil spread around the track, bringing out the red flag. After a long delay officials determined a five lap dash would decide the result of the Supersport Race. Kenan Sofuoglu led the way and after dominating practice and qualifying seemed hard to beat. However on lap 2 Van Der Mark overtook Sofuoglu and the battle was on. However in yet another twist Sofuoglu crashed out followed shortly by Van Der Mark, leaving Jules Cluzel on the MV Augusta in the lead. Cluzel was never headed and celebrated a maiden win for MV Augusta. Kev Coghlan took second place from Rafaelle De Rosa in third.
