2012 Year in Review

December 21, 2012  •  5 Comments

2012 has been a huge year here at flashpixx. We reached well over 100,000 hits on our website, we shot World Superbikes, MotoGP, Australian Superbikes, ANDRA Pro Top Bike, and lots of WA events including the awesome WA State Road Racing Championships.

ANDRA Pro Top Bike

The year kicked off with the WA round of the ANDRA Pro Top Bike event at Perth Motorplex. As seems to be the case when the bikes come to Perth it was hot, over 40 degrees on the Saturday. We covered the racing for Australian Motorcycle News Magazine (AMCN), and put together a feature on 3 times Australian Top Bike champ Chris Matheson on "Nitro Voodoo"

We were able to achieve our first poster in AMCN...

World Superbikes

February rolled around and we were off to Phillip Island to shoot World Superbikes. We really enjoy this event as it is very relaxed with riders, teams and officials happy to chat and stop for photos.

Thursday was media day with riders participating in staged events for the international media.

Friday was practice day with the weather warm. It was great to see WA local Bryan Staring having a ride on the Team Pedercini Superbike.

Qualifying on Saturday saw Tom Sykes on pole from Max Biaggi and Carlos Checa

Aussie Josh Brookes had a guest ride on the Crescent Fixi Suzuki Superbike

... and Davo Johnson had a Superbike ride on a pretty much Superstock tune BMW

We were able to get onto the starting grid for Race 1 of the Superbikes

Race 1 saw Carlos Checa have a huge off at high speed in the final turn. Max Biaggi won the race in a canter. Race two saw Biaggi have an off, return to the race in last place and run an amazing second to Carlos Checa.

Trackworks at Barbagallo

Track upgrades at Barbagallo saw the delay of the start of the road racing season in WA. The upgrades were welcomed by most with improved track safety a highlight. The biggest visible change is the new pits in the infield and the new race office, race control and media centre. A new medical centre also features in the new infield complex.

Australian Superbikes

The first event at the upgraded Barbagallo circuit for 2012 was the Australian Superbikes, not so ably supported by the V8 Supersnores... The weather was shocking, with the first wet race weekend in over 5 years. Wayne Maxwell on the Team Honda CBR1000RR won the round from Josh Waters. WA Local Ben Henry had a great round coming in third.

WA State Roadracing Championship

The State Roadracing Championship kicked off in May with the Club Championships. Adam Senior took Superbikes from Cam Stronach and Mark Schnierer third.

The State season proper commenced in June with 5 rounds over the following 4 months ending in October with the final round. Entering the final round of Superbikes Ralph Mammoliti had a small points lead from Adam Senior. Mammoliti seemed to have a dream run with no crashes or mechanical issues while Senior struggled with both throughout the season. Mammoliti was crowned State Champion.

The highlight of the season was the return to racing by Matt Battista. Five years ago Matt suffered an serious injury that has left him a paraplegic. Nonetheless Matt has persisted and with the help of is team has made a very successful return.

There are many characters that make up the group of riders taking part. One such "character" is Robin Huth on his Pacman styled ZX10R.

Also a highlight was the emergence of the very professional VRT Racing team made up of Tim Simmons, Lubi Safranec, Glenn Lowe and Rob Wasley.

Targa Rally

We travelled out to Toodyay on the Saturday of the Targa Rally to take a few shots and try out a new lens. Set up on a corner shooting the cars while trying to navigate between the trees and other spectators. It was challenging and not ideal location wise. To our astonishment we managed to win the photography competition, and a new Toshiba laptop!!

Australian Moto Trials Championships

The Australian Moto Trials Championships were held in WA this year and featured the best of the Australian and New Zealand trials riders. New Zealander Jake Whittaker won the championship. These riders show amazing bike control and skill in traversing unimaginable obstacles.

MotoGP Phillip Island

Far and away the highlight for us for 2012 was the opportunity to shoot MotoGP. To experience the awesome talent of Australia's Casey Stoner is something we will never forget.

Thursday brought the unveiling of Stoner Corner. This is the corner on the Phillip Island Circuit that Stoner "owns". He can be seen spinning up the rear wheel through there at over 250 kmh!

Even an off in Qualifying didn't slow the master down - mangled ankle or not!

It was a privilege while standing at Lukey Heights during Friday Practice to have the man himself wave to me while I took this image

It was also a privilege to witness Stoner's last MotoGP race in Australia. The following are just a few of the many images we captured of the man and his family over the weekend.
